Avenir is a geometric sans-serif typeface designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1998. Avenir is the most popular font family from Linotype GmbH and the word avenir is a French word that means “Future” and it took inspiration from an early geometric sans-serif typeface Erbar (1922) and Futura (1927). Adrian Frutiger integrate Avenir to be more organic and humanist interpretation of these highly geometric types.
The next version of Avenir has come together with the best design shapes, kerning and glyphs options and officially named after Avenir is Avenir Next. The font family is a result of Frutiger’s hard working together with Linotype’s in-house type designer Akira Kobayashi during the year 2004–2007.
Initially the font family was released in 24 different font styles that are attractive looking and have enough inspiration from the main font family Avenir. The Avenir Next comes with six weights, each with a roman and italic version, in two widths (normal and condensed).
